Questions and Answers

Who can attend Hiawatha Leadership Academy?
Hiawatha Leadership is a free, open-enrollment charter school currently serving grades K -2, and growing one grade level per year to a K – 12 school. There is no tuition. The school is funded like any other public school with state per-pupil funds.

What about transportation?
Hiawatha Leadership Academy provides busing to all students whose addresses fall within the busing zone. Please call the main office for more specific information regarding these busing boundaries.

What are the school hours?
The Academy’s school hours are from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday – Thursday and from 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Fridays. This longer school day provides our scholars 40% more time for learning than a traditional public school. We do not have school on the weekends.

What is the dress code?
All of our scholars are expected to wear a uniform. By wearing a uniform, our scholars are a part of a team and focus their efforts on what they are learning in class rather than on what another scholar is wearing. The uniform consists of a collared HLA polo shirt, khaki pants, belts and tennis shoes. No jeans are allowed.

Are lunches provided?
The Academy will provide a catered hot lunch. It will be free or reduced-price for students who fall within the guidelines provided by the state. Students can also bring a bag lunch from home and milk will be available for purchase. No fast food is allowed for student lunches.
